Sound of Music
It’s not so much the hills that are alive with the sound of music these days so
much as it is the West End of London, as this beloved musical is still going
strong. A musical based around a singing family with some nuns and Nazi’s thrown
in might not sound like the greatest idea for a musical ever, yet The Sound of
Music has become one of the classics of its genre.
Having just finished its run at the end of February, the musical tells the story
of restless nun Maria, who wishes to leave her convent and gain experience in
the real world. Such experience is given to her by Captain Von Trapp, the
ultimate love interest of Maria, and his children, whom Maria teaches to sing
and enjoy life again after their father has been running a very strict household
since his wife’s death. Von Trapp and Maria fall in love but, as they are
singing at a national concert in their native Austria, they are forced to flee
up into the mountains, helped by Mother Abbot, and over the border into
Switzerland to escape the Nazi threat. It probably is as cheesy as it sounds but
it’s definitely well worth a watch, if only for the number of remarkable songs
the show contains; “Climb every Mountain” and the titular “Sound of Music” being
the stand-out ones.
The show, in its most recent incarnation, drew great publicity for starting what
seems to have become a new craze for picking ones leading cast members through
T.V talent shows. Connie Fisher was the woman chosen to solve the problem of
Maria and she did a spectacular job before leaving to pursue other projects. Now
that the show has moved away from the West End and onto a national tour, Fisher
is expected to return for some of the shows at least, so it’s a great
opportunity to see theatre’s hottest new star in action again if you missed her
the first time around.
London will certainly be a duller place now this show has moved on to greener
hills, seeking other rainbows as it were, but now at least people nationwide
will get a chance to enjoy this show. You are implored to go and see this show
and, if you leave without Do Re Me in your head at the end of the night, ask for
your money back!
